Chapter 25

Night Runners

Al Marcelli was proud of his well-organized enterprise in Las Vegas, Nevada. Through his family, he had established the western shipping connections in and out of Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Denver. When ‘New America’ slowed down commerce trucking, his family saw an opportunity to make good money along with his other endeavors. After his father Carlos died, and his half-brother Douglas Jackman messed up on Mars, Al acquired the family business through old Las Vegas. He maximized his transports deliveries just one step ahead of the federal eyes.

Whenever someone needed goods transported, his expertise helped those that wanted to avoid the government’s prying eyes. A new shipment from Dallas had just come into his casino, rebuilt four times after each firebombing. When Al took over, he put a strong arm on the local gangs and became their law.

“Is that the last one, Carson?” He asked one of the muscled movers, carrying a box outside to the van.

“Yeah, last one. We drivin’?” the man shouted from the doorway.

“No, I’m having Marty and Jonesy take it. They came in last night and should be rested up.”

The big mover shrugged his shoulders and walked outside passing Marty who just entered.

“Everything’s loaded boss,” Marty stated, hanging his thumbs in the corners of his pants pockets.

“Here’s half payment, the other half will be paid when you arrive in Denver,” Al explained.

“The log says we go to Salt Lake City first.”

“Yeah, just the two boxes marked, and then head south again.”

Marty took the payment. Once they were in the refueled van, he gave Jonesy a fourth of the money.

“This all?” Jonesy asked staring at his share.

“We’ll get the rest once we deliver in Denver.”

Marty turned on the power of the scratched hybrid vehicle, which had seen better days.

Samantha, who arranged to put the items for shipping from her father’s backroom into storage earlier, met with her brother in his Denver apartment.

“I’ve done all that you’ve asked, Adrian.”

“I hired help that our father knew to move some of these items out of their location.”

“Where are they now?”

Samantha’s impatience grew.

“They just left, so they should be there in three to four days.”

“Why can’t I drive? I can be at our destination in one day.”

“You drive too fast. What if you get stopped? No, we are not in that much hurry.”

“Who did you hire?” she asked.

“You remember father’s mess with that Jackman fellow? Well so happens his half-brother is in Nevada.

“Let’s eat. All this planning is making me hungry.”

They ate at the hotel restaurant and headed for the offices downtown.

“I got another mover that will meet our contacts in Grand Junction.”

“Why?”

“We don’t want to be caught in the middle of something if they are stopped.”

All through the night, Marty and Jonesy alternated their driving along Highway 15. He didn’t place the van on automatic drive in case a situation came up They could see from the top of the hill outside of Provo, their first destination was Salt Lake City.

“Are we going to stop for food?” Jonesy began feeling the hunger growls, emanating from his stomach.
